Madden 21 will be updated with the new Washington Redskins team name

Last week, news broke that Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder was finally going to change the name of his football team. Bear in mind, this decision comes after years of controversy and outrage with the name that Snyder had ignored. It was only after increased pressure from sponsors, as a result of the growing Black Lives Matter movement, that Snyder was finally forced to act.

The decision to rename the Washington Redskins comes late in the NFL offseason. Preseason typically starts in August but who knows what’s happening with the schedule as coronavirus continues to spread across the United States. But whatever happens with the NFL in real life, Madden 21 will still release as planned on August 28 (or the 25th if you pre-order).

This poses somewhat of a problem considering we still don’t know what the Washington Redskins’ new name will be. So we reached out to EA to see how they would be handling the name change in the game.

When Madden 21 first releases, it will feature a “generic” Washington name. This will only be temporary until the finalized team name and logo is revealed. Once that happens, the name and logo will be changed via a title update automatically. EA further explained:

"The first changes will be available to our EA Access players and will include audio/commentary updates; motion graphics and presentation updates; stadium art, environments, crowd gear and signage updates; and uniform updates. Players may continue to see some outdated Washington references in other areas of the game at launch, but we are committed to removing all of those from the game in additional title updates coming shortly after launch."

For those who purchase a physical copy of the game, you’ll need to connect online to receive the update as it’s already in the final stages of preparation. Overall, EA added they are “pleased” with the decision for Washington to change its team name.

There’s been no shortage of suggestions for what Washington will change its name to. I think we can all agree that anything will be better than “Redskins,” which is incredibly racist and offensive to Native Americans. What would you like to see Washington’s team name be changed to?
