5 overlooked RPGS you can digitally download and play right now
GreedFall – Focus Home Interactive – Available on XB1, PS4, PC
A common saying, particularly in the game industry, is that “imitation is often the sincerest form of flattery.” For example, studio giant BioWare’s (mostly) continued success in the action RPG genre, especially with the Dragon Age series and the original Mass Effect trilogy, continues to spawn many imitators, but few ever manage to get it right. Thankfully, GreedFall is one of those few titles that not only manages to invoke the spirit of BioWare’s great earlier titles, but it also manages to stand toe-to-toe with many modern action RPGs despite being an independently developed game.
GreedFall isn’t set in a typical fantasy world, as it presents itself with a “colonial swashbuckler” aesthetic, though elements like magic and mythical beasts still play a large part in the gameplay. Sadly, the game does suffer from frame rate issues and the character models look very “dated,” especially when compared to other modern action RPG heavyweights like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Final Fantasy VII Remake.
However, the story itself is entertaining thanks to some good writing and decent voice acting. The gameplay is also responsive and fun, primarily thanks to the game’s well-implemented controls, even when the frame rates dip in quality. To be honest, I didn’t even know that this game existed until recently, but after experiencing it, I’m really glad that I got the chance to play this largely overlooked RPG.
