Battle Chasers: Nightwar – THQ Nordic – Available on Switch, PS4, XB1, PC, iOS, and Android

The Battle Chasers comic book was a popular, if limited, fantasy series that ran from 1998 to 2001, at which point the series creator, Joe Madureira, left the comic book industry to become a game designer. However, he never forgot about his beloved franchise, which led to him leading a successful 2015 Kickstarter campaign to develop Battle Chasers: Nightwar.

Knowledge of the series isn’t required to enjoy the classic 90s JRPG style of gameplay, though the game gets bogged down due to the need to excessively “grind” your characters’ levels in order to progress through the game’s many dungeons. Fortunately, the game lets you pick the dungeon difficulty, rewarding you with better loot and crafting materials for completing the more treacherous versions.

This game is easy to find on almost any platform, but the console versions are much more expensive. However, I was able to play it for free using the Google Play Pass on Android, and it’s also currently available to download for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. PS4 owners, however, may want to wait until the game goes on sale, as it sits at a very pricey $29.99 on the PS Store. If you happen to enjoy fantasy JRPGs with a little steampunk flair, than you may find some nostalgic joy in this quirky game.
