When talks begin about a new Madden video game, speculation arises on who is going to be the new cover athlete. Lamar Jackson has that honor for Madden 21.

It is that time of the year again. Talks about a new Madden video game have been discussed over the past few weeks. Amidst all of the games speculation was the speculation on who will be the cover athlete for the new game. Being a cover athlete for any video game is truly an honor (or a curse) for the player being chosen. This year Madden 21 has given that honor to Baltimore Raven’s quarterback, Lamar Jackson.

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens had a terrific 2019-2020 season.  Lamar Jackson led the Ravens to an incredible 14-2 record, winning the AFC North division with ease. Lamar’s stats for last year were pretty amazing as well. Here were Lamar’s stats for the 15 games he played in the 2019-2020 season:

Passing:

  • PCT: 66.1%
  • YDS: 3,127
  • TD: 36
  • INT: 6

Rushing:

  • ATT: 176
  • ATT/G: 11.7
  • YDS: 1,206
  • YDS/G: 80.4
  • TD: 7
  • FUM: 8

I can not agree more with the decision to put Lamar Jackson as the cover athlete for Madden 21. Sports video game covers do not usually like to repeat cover athletes unless it is for special reasons. Lamar Jackson has never been a cover athlete for Madden in the past. With the incredible season he had last year, despite coming up short in the playoffs, I can understand why they decided to choose him.

It will also be interesting to see what rating Lamar Jackson lands in Madden 21. I believe he is going to have incredible speed thanks to the kind of rushing stats he had last year. Being a quarterback and being able to rush over 1,206 yards for a season is insane. He also averaged 80.4 yards per game which is also pretty amazing considering that even some of the best quarterbacks in the league do not rush to nearly as much as him.

Look at Tom Brady for example. In 2019-2020, Tom Brady’s average rushing yards per game was a lousy 2.1. Granted, you don’t have to be a dual-threat quarterback to succeed in the NFL but the fact of the matter is Lamar Jackson was able to do the best of both worlds — racking up yards on the ground and putting up nice passing stats — making it difficult for teams to game plan against him.

When the Baltimore Raven’s twitter account posted the video of Lamar confirming he would be this year’s cover athlete, I honestly could not be more excited for him. Lamar Jackson has been so much fun to watch on TV and I absolutely can not wait to see what kind of stats he has in Madden 21. Lamar’s career is just getting started and it is nice to see Madden recognize the young talent that he is. Here’s to a healthy and productive season.

Madden 21 still hasn’t officially been announced by EA but that could change this week. EA typically reveals the newest installment in the annual football series during the NFL Draft, which will take place this Thursday, April 23.
