Captain America remembers an old ally and how it may tie into the Avengers’ future in the latest comic based on Square Enix’s upcoming Marvel’s Avengers video game.

Another month, another prequel comic to the delayed Square Enix Marvel’s Avengers game. This one focuses on “The First Avenger,” Captain America.

In the comic, Captain America is fighting one of his arguably more low-tier foes, Batroc, a villain who his whole deal is that he’s French and very acrobatic. That’s literally it.

But the fight with this D-list loser villain isn’t really the focus of the story. The real story is about remembering an old army buddy from his World War II days and what he taught Captain America about not just taking what is presented in front of you at face value; looking beyond that and how it might tie into what Captain America wants the Avengers to be.

There’s not really much more to the story than that, and it works as a simple story with a possible lead into other things. In that sense, it’s probably the best comic out of this batch so far. It actually gives us some unique insight into Captain America and what his deal is that isn’t completely obvious.

Unfortunately, with no real connection to the other comics, there’s a lot of potential lost here. Honestly, I would’ve released this comic first, then have all the other subsequent comics tie into and lead from this point.

At the end of the issue, Captain America mentions he wants to talk to Tony about the future of the Avengers. That could’ve easily lead into the Iron Man comic and them figuring out how other members, who feature in their own comics (i.e. Hulk & Black Widow), tie into that future that Iron Man & Captain America want and how those two visions might clash, etc.

Marvel’s Avengers: Captain America #1 shows that with a little better release planning and actually tying in the tie-in comics together, these might’ve actually been something worthwhile that had some meaning going into the now delayed game’s release. Instead of these things, we got comic stories that are poorly structured and don’t really matter.

Marvel’s Avengers: Captain America #1 is available now. Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers video game is currently due out September 1.
