Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 2 character predictions
Nintendo has yet to announce the newest character for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 2 DLC, but that hasn’t stopped all the rumors and speculation from gamers. Here are six possible choices that would be ideal additions to the roster.
Back in January, Nintendo released the final character for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 1, which ended up as Byleth, the silent protagonist from the recent Nintendo Switch title Fire Emblem: Three Houses. However, the big news revealed during the latest Smash-focused Nintendo Direct was that a new Fighter Pass featuring six new playable characters would be released over the next two years.
According to series creator Masahiro Sakurai, all six fighters have already been selected and finalized by Nintendo. As Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is currently the second best-selling Switch game with about 17.68 millions units being sold (as of December 31, 2019), it’s no surprise that Nintendo wants to continue the game’s astronomical success by adding additional fighters, spirits, and stages. The anticipation for new character reveals in the Super Smash Bros. series has always been high, especially with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which featured the first third-party characters to appear in the series (Metal Gear Solid protagonist Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog).
It’s unlikely that Nintendo announces the next fighter before the next Nintendo Direct, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from rabid speculation on which characters will ultimately be selected for the second (and most likely last) batch of DLC fighters. Interestingly, while there are some legitimate Nintendo-owned characters that fans still want to see included, the most popular choices have largely been third-party characters.
It would be impossible to analyze all the rumored fighters that fans want for the next Fighters Pass, but a few choices do stand out. Perhaps the current most wanted fighter out there is Sora, the main protagonist from the Kingdom Hearts series. However, there’s a report floating around that Sora was actually considered for inclusion, but Disney of Japan supposedly prevented Sora’s inclusion.
Dante, the sword-swinging Devil May Cry protagonist, has also been a popular candidate. The Nintendo Switch re-releases of the first three Devil May Cry titles only continued to heighten the speculation. While it’s not a stretch to think that Dante is a likely candidate, the over-abundance of sword fighters (along with Sakurai’s recent comments that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has “too many sword characters”) suggests that Dante is not as strong a possibility as once thought.
Even Microsoft’s own Master Chief, the iconic hero in the Halo franchise, has been strongly rumored ever since Banjo-Kazooie (another current Microsoft property) appeared on the roster last year. While anything is certainly possible, but I think that Master Chief’s inclusion is highly unlikely. Not only is Halo Microsoft’s most important intellectual gaming property, but Halo also has no past connections to Nintendo. However, the six possible characters that I think will appear in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 2 DLC all had games released on a Nintendo console at some point in history (though this isn’t definitive, as proven when Nintendo added Joker from Persona).
