Overwatch League Opening Weekend 2020: Teams to watch
By Ty Brody
New York Excelsior
The NYXL returns the majority of their Season 2 roster, and while the perception surrounding this team remains optimistic, some questions concerning their ability to win the big rounds still loom large. Over the break, the New York Excelsior made a notable change upfront with the addition of “HOTBA” from the Guangzhou Charge. Performing well over the past two seasons, welcoming in an off-tank of his caliber could do wonders for the team.
However, the team did say farewell to “Meko”, the team’s pivotal tank during the 2019 season. It may be tough to fill the shoes of “Pine” and “Meko”, but it’s tough to doubt this roster considering their success week in and week out. The addition of “HOTBA” may usher in a new and aggressive playstyle for the team, one that we didn’t necessarily see from New York last season.
Additional roster changes include the arrival of backup DPS and Support players, “WhoRU” and “Mandu”. Though each player could play a large role for the team in 2020, it’s encouraging to know the team will still have other experienced players to rely on. The singing of “WhoRU” is extremely interesting considering that he was one of the most anticipated signings during the break. Will he pan out and contribute immediately? Maybe we’ll see on Saturday.
