San Francisco 49ers vs Kansas City Chiefs: First Half Recap

The Kansas City Chiefs received the ball to start the game and scored a touchdown on their first possession. Damien Williams, who rushed for 31 yards on the drive, scored on a two-yard touchdown run to give the Chiefs an early 7-0 lead.

The 49ers couldn’t mount much offensively on their first drive, failing to get the run going against the much-improved Chiefs defense. A quick three-and-out gave Kansas City the ball back, but a solid punt pinned them at their own nine. They drove to midfield, but a three-yard loss on a first down run led to a stalled drive.

The 49ers looked like they were on their way to a touchdown, but Jimmy Garoppolo threw an ill-advised pass that was intercepted at the Chiefs 12-yard-line. It was returned 20 yards, giving Kansas City good starting field position.

Turns out, the field position meant little. Patrick Mahomes threw a 52-yard touchdown to Tyreek Hill, extending their lead to 14-0.

Looking for any kind of momentum, the 49ers managed enough offense to get into field goal range. Robbie Gould drilled a 52-yard-field goal to get the 49ers on the board, 14-3.

With two minutes left in the first half, the 49ers needed a stop. Instead, they let by another bomb. Patrick Mahomes once again connected with Tyrkeek Hill for a 47-yard touchdown, giving the Chiefs a 21-3 halftime lead.
