The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild “Untitled Sequel” – Release Date: TBD (To Be Determined)

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is already considered one of the best video games ever made, but the announcement of a direct sequel took many gamers by surprise. After all, Nintendo doesn’t usually develop direct sequels in The Legend of Zelda franchise.

Even with the very few Zelda titles that are (somewhat) sequels, they largely take place in new environments with completely new characters and different iterations of Link. For example, Nintendo created The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds as a “follow-up” to the SNES masterpiece The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. However, the game’s story takes place several centuries later, and the actual timeline of the game places it chronologically after The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

Why is all this relevant? To show that a true Zelda sequel that appears to largely take place in the same chronological setting with the same character iterations is an extremely rare thing for Nintendo to do.

Nintendo ended its E3 2019 Direct Presentation with a teaser trailer for this highly anticipated sequel that most have tentatively titled as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild II, though Nintendo will most likely retitle the game (Zelda II: The Adventures of Link is the only numbered sequel in the Zelda franchise). As mentioned before, Nintendo rarely announces games before development is nearly finished, so it’s extremely possible that this unnamed sequel could see release by the end of 2020 (though E3 2020 will likely be the next time Nintendo releases any new details).
