#4. Star Wars: Battlefront II

What a long road it has been for Star Wars Battlefront II. While the graphics and gameplay have been top-notch from the beginning, the game was so bogged down by loot box mechanics that even before launch it was one of the most controversial and hated games in years. No one would’ve been surprised if Electronic Arts just let it die considered it an expensive lesson and moved on.

However to their credit, in 2020, Star Wars Battlefront II is one of the most complete and fun experiences you can have. There are still cosmetic items you can buy with real money, but the in-game loot box mechanics that definitely favored pay-to-win models and painfully slow progression are a thing of the past.

The game has also been constantly updated with lots of new free content. In fact, if you just got into it today, you might be a little overwhelmed at just how much there is.

While the game doesn’t really reflect The Mandalorian in any particular way (though Electronic Arts would be wise to add content based on the show in the near future), it is a giant Star Wars toy box that lets you play with just about any character or vehicle you could ask for. In that way, it’s an easy way to immerse yourself in the universe of a galaxy far, far away until the new season of the show starts.

#3. Star Wars: Republic Commando

If The Mandalorian is proof of anything, it’s that you can tell super interesting stories in the Star Wars universe that have very little if anything to do with Jedi or Sith. The Mandalorian might lightly touch on some of that stuff but it’s not a focus of the story.

In video games, Star Wars has already proven this a number of times, arguably with no better example than the excellent Star Wars: Republic Commando. In both the movies and shows, you don’t really get to know the beings that comprise the infamous Clone Army. There aren’t many indicators that they have any real personality or feeling or any sort of independent thought.

In Star Wars: Republic Commando, it specifically focuses on a four-man squad of these supposedly easily replaceable clones and gives them unique identities and loads of personality. It’s just a great squad tactics game. While you technically can just shoot your way through it, giving your squad proper strategic orders in the heat of battle will make things go way smoother.

It’s a tad on the short side but it’s an excellent game that explores and gives depth to an entire army we don’t really think much more of than mindless drones in the movies and TV shows. Pick it up cheap on Xbox or PC where it’s still easily available.
