In what ended up being one of the worst-kept secrets of 2019, Capcom finally announced a remake for Resident Evil 3. Here’s what we know about it so far.

Following the successful release of the Resident Evil 2 remake in January of 2019, which shipped over three million copies in just its first weekend, it was only a matter of time until Capcom announced plans to remake the third game in the franchise, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Well, they didn’t make us wait long.

After Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi previously hinted at such, Capcom announced the Resident Evil 3 remake during the PlayStation State of Play in December.  What’s more, the remake will be available early next year on April 3, 2020. So as we prepare to turn the calendar page, here’s everything we know about Resident Evil 3 remake.

Release date and platforms

As I mentioned, the Resident Evil 3 remake will be released on April 3, 2020.  It will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

What’s new?

The Resident Evil 3 remake will be making some improvements from the original 1999 version. Most notably, the remake will feature modernized third-person shooter gameplay mechanics and an over-the-shoulder camera angle, similar to that of Resident Evil 2. This means no more tank controls or fixed camera angles. Cutting-edge photogrammetry has also been used to scan in actors, creating a more realistic look and feel to the characters and zombies, too.

As far as Resident Evil 3’s main story and characters, it’ll likely play out much like the original. That means you’ll be playing as S.T.A.R.S. officer Jill Valentine as she attempts to escape from Raccoon City while being hunted by the bioweapon known as Nemesis. However, the press release did mention “new content,” so it’s possible Capcom could be adding some new areas of the city to explore. Capcom added a few new areas to the Resident Evil 2 remake, as well.

Resident Evil Resistance

Resident Evil: Resistance was actually announced months before Resident Evil 3. At the time, we figured this would be Capcom’s next big RE release. Little did we know that it was just an added component to the remake.

Resident Evil Resistance is an “asymmetrical 4 vs. 1 multiplayer game” in which four players control Survivors who must work together to escape a series of deadly experiments set by the “Mastermind,” the player pulling the levers behind the scenes. The Mastermind controls a deck of individual cards that they can play to manipulate the environment and unleash vicious creatures, set traps and weaponized security cameras.

Resident Evil Resistance is included with the Resident Evil 3 remake. As a standalone title, this probably would’ve been a disappointment for many fans of the franchise. But as an optional online multiplayer mode, it’s much more exciting.

PC Specs

Thanks to Steam, the PC specs for the Resident Evil 3 remake have already been revealed. Thankfully, it’s nothing too intensive. The minimum system requirements are pretty much in-line with what they were for Resident Evil 2. The recommended specs have not yet been revealed.
