Pokémon has two great mobile games out, but which one is better? Pokémon Go or Pokémon Masters?

Pokémon Go came out in July of 2016. It was developed by Niantic and features a true to life game world that can only be explored by leaving your house and actually walking around. The game features Poké stops and Gyms, where you can collect Poké balls, potions, and other items. You can also fight other Pokémon trainers in these gyms.

In Pokémon Go you catch Pokémon by walking around and throwing balls at them when they appear in the wild. It’s very much like the video games, except you actually have to walk around outside in order to catch Pokémon. Pokémon Go is also divided into three teams, Instinct (Yellow), Valor (Red), and Mystic (Blue). Obviously, you probably know all of this. Pokémon Go is incredibly popular and has over 5M players.

But what about Pokémon Masters? Pokémon Masters came out in August 2019. It was developed by DeNA and is a completely different game than Pokémon Go. Pokémon Masters is much more story focused. You go through levels of different stories and battle other trainers. In Pokémon Masters you battle NPCs.

Pokémon Masters functions with something called Sync Pairs. Instead of catching Pokémon, which you don’t in this game, you collect Sync Pairs. A Sync Pair is matchup of a trainer and a Pokémon. You can get Brock and Onix or Misty and Starmie. It’s basically like digitally collecting trading cards. Instead of building a team of 6 Pokémon, you build a team of 3 sync pairs.

So which one is better, Pokémon Go or Pokémon Masters? And if you don’t have either of them installed, which one should you go out of your way to start playing?

It really depends on your own personal preferences and what you like to do with your free time. Are you the kind of person that spends a lot of time walking or adventuring? Are you often outside or exploring your city? If that sounds like you, you should get going on the Pokémon Go train.

If you’re kind of a stay at home person or you don’t have a lot of free time to drive around and look for gyms, maybe Pokémon Masters is for you. However, there’s nothing stopping you from playing and enjoying both games. If you came here as a Pokémon Go player wondering if Pokémon Masters is worth it, give it a shot. You might love it.
