PlayStation’s 25th Anniversary: Five best PS1 games of all-time
Final Fantasy VII – Square
Final Fantasy VII, much like the PS1 itself, was initially conceived for the SNES. However, the PS1’s CD-ROM format convinced Square (now Square Enix) to switch development over to Sony’s new console. The extra storage space allowed by CDs gave the developers the ability to add new features such as fully 3D characters and animated cutscenes.
Square also felt that Nintendo’s more expensive cartridge prices potentially alienated gamers compared to CD-ROM games which were cheaper to make, thus cheaper to sell. This decision resulted in the absolute best-of-the-best PS1 games ever made.
Released to immediate success in 1997, Final Fantasy VII helped to popularize RPGs in North America. The hallmark title also contributed to the PS1’s success, as it was the second-best-selling PS1 game of all time, with nearly ten million copies sold on the system.
The game’s popularity has created a lasting legacy that is still be seen today. For example, Cloud Strife, the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VII, represented the series as a crossover fighter in Nintendo’s massively successful Super Smash Bros. franchise.
More recently, Square Enix has continued to prepare the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII remake for its upcoming March 2020 release. Final Fantasy VII has even had continuations and expansions on its core story through spin-off games and films.
And with Final Fantasy VII, that wraps up the first era of PlayStation. What do you think of our top list of the best PS1 games? Are there games not on the list that you think should be?
