Resident Evil 2 – Capcom

Several new game series started on the PS1, but arguably one of the most popular franchises was Resident Evil. The first Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan) was originally conceived as a follow-up to the Nintendo Famicom game Sweet Home (also a Capcom game that essentially started the survival horror genre) before becoming a break-out hit on the PS1 in 1996. However, the game’s superior sequel improved over the original in almost every way.

The series’ continued success led to more sequels, spin-offs, and even a Hollywood film franchise. Resident Evil 2 validated the survival horror genre’s popularity as it became one of the best-selling PS1 games.

Although Resident Evil 4 has generally been considered the pinnacle game in the series, Resident Evil 2 had continued to grow in popularity.

Back in January 2019, Capcom released the Resident Evil 2 remake (the above trailer) to critical acclaim. The original Resident Evil received the same treatment for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. The remake has already sold nearly 5 million copies, nearly equal to the sales of the original game. Even after two decades, this PS1 classic is still being enjoyed by old and new gamers alike.
