7. Grindstone

Developer: Capybara Games

When I tell you that I stayed up until 2 AM playing Grindstone, it means that I absolutely stayed up until 2 AM playing Grindstone, because the game is just that good. This puzzle game tasks you with playing as the brutish Jorj as you slay thousands of creatures in an effort to [*takes deep breath*] get this bread. The fundamentals revolve around you drawing connections between as many creatures of the same color as you can in order to attack, with higher combos giving you better chances at collecting loot and defeating the various mini-bosses in each level. Just like it says in the title, Grindstone is a grindy sort of gameplay experience in order to get as many resources as possible to prepare for the challenges ahead. You’ll replay levels plenty of times in order to get more loot, but you’re going to enjoy it each time.

8. Sayonara Wild Hearts

Developer: Simogo

It’s hard to properly, through words, encapsulate the feelings I get from playing Sayonara Wild Hearts. It’s a pop music video come to life and is best played while wearing your absolute best pair of headphones. The touch controls can occasionally feel a little sluggish, but it doesn’t stymie the overall experience of blasting through each of its gorgeous looking, and sounding, levels. The game isn’t long and can be completed in a little over an hour, but the quality here is a reminder that video games can be as satisfying an experience no matter the length. It’s the kind of game that even the most casual of gamers should experience.
