Pokemon Sword and Shield: New creatures, gym leaders & more
The Pokemon Company unceremoniously dumped a bunch of new information for the upcoming Pokemon Sword and Shield today, and it’s a lot!
There’s no rhyme or reason to the whims of The Pokemon Company. They’ll have a short demonstration at E3 for their latest title, then dump a bunch of information at once a few weeks later, then feed drip info like a new creature here and there separated weeks at a time. Pokemon Sword and Shield seems to follow that information reveal schedule, as well.
Today saw a huge dump of information shared on social media, announcing new pocket monsters, gym leaders, some version exclusives, pre-order bonuses and more.
Let’s start with the creatures, as you’ll want to keep up with the modern direction of the franchise and catch ’em all some of them. Rolycoly is a one-foot lump of coal with a glaring red eye, and it looks like it serves a practical purpose in the Galar region. Duraludon is a Steel/Dragon creature that’s sturdy, but light, as its alloy-like frame makes it more brittle.
The most important Pokemon reveal of this news dump is Alcremie, which is a fairy-type, cream-based creature that produces whipped cream that becomes richer the happier it is. The fact that it throws scented cream at its opponents to soothe their will to battle is adorable and hilarious at the same time. Gen Z kids are calling this a Big Mood as we speak.
Additionally, TPC revealed the backgrounds of Chairman Rose and company VP / Rose’s secretary, Oleana, as part of Pokemon Sword and Shield’s story. I’m sure their venture in producing gym battles with Dynamax enlargement to the spectacle of an audience is pure-hearted, and nothing bad will be revealed about their interests in the future!
With the adaptation of sponsorships on jerseys in the NBA (let alone international sports), they have become more prevalent in the Gym Challenge and Championship Cup in the Galar region. The current champ is Leon, and he seems to have a more active role in the story of Pokemon Sword and Shield, showing up throughout your journey.
With Dynamaxing being the generation’s “make standard Pokemon huge” gimmick, there’s another twist. On top of that, Gigantamaxing will affect only particular Galar creatures, giving a unique G-Max move and are rare finds in Max Raid battles. Alcremie, Corviknight, and Drednaw are the first announced to get this bonus.
Pokemon Sword and Shield are coming exclusively to the Nintendo Switch on November 15. Deino and Jangmo-o are Sword-exclusive, Larvitar and Goomy are only in Shield, and even Gym leaders are exclusive to certain versions. Bea, the Fighting-type leader, is only in Sword, Alister’s Ghost-type gym is in Shield, and there are bonuses for pre-ordering the double pack or digital versions of either.
