Yep, you know it was coming. It’s like the Event Horizon; nothing you do could stop it from coming. No matter what aspect you’re looking at, 2018’s PlayStation 4-exclusive title is the best the character has ever received. It is perhaps even the greatest superhero game ever made, right next to the Batman: Arkham series. The living city of New York, excellent web-swinging and combat mechanics, and an engaging original story with smart new takes on classic characters make Insomniac Games’ rendition the premiere title for web-heads everywhere.
Sure, I could attempt to take the more counter-culture approach in deciding the best game to have a hot take that gets people riled up. I could make the argument that Ultimate is the most faithful rendition of the character thanks to its gorgeous comic-book art style inspired by my beloved run of comics of the same name.
Maybe I could argue that the variety of four playable Spider-Men in Shattered Dimensions is the most valuable. And perhaps I could argue that the simplistic and classical nature of the 2000 Spider-Man makes it the most nostalgically pleasing of all.
In the end, Marvel’s Spider-Man is not just a fantastic game in the franchise’s standards but a tremendous video game altogether, and evidence that any licensed property can make an impact on the industry if given the proper care and make anyone a True Believer.
