#3. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

July is set to be a pretty release heavy month for the Nintendo Switch, and just one of the big reasons for that is the long-awaited sequel to a beloved franchise that is coming only to Nintendo’s console hybrid, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.

Starting back with the first game which was titled X-Men Legends (but up through Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 there is a through storyline), the concept of these games is incredibly simple; it’s just Diablo with a Marvel skin plastered over every element. But it’s also been an incredibly fun series that offers its own little twists of the well-worn genre.

While the series arguably released at too fast a pace (four games in less than four calendar years), it’s been over a decade since the last entry so instead of feeling all-too-familiar to previous entries or other Diablo-style games (of which there are admittedly many) Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 will just feel like a fresh spin all over again.

There have been several different developers on this franchise, and for the latest entry, it’s developed by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja, which is known for action and fighting games (Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, etc.). It looks to retain that style the series is known for, though.

More than the action, the X-Men Legends, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance games also were known for tons of deep cuts in terms of both character selection and Easter Eggs, showing it was made by people who loved Marvel Comics and wanted to squeeze every reference they could into the game.

Early signs indicate this will be the case with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 (why else would you have Elsa Bloodstone as a playable character?) so look forward to getting your ultimate Marvel fix when the game comes to Nintendo Switch in just about four weeks on July 19.
