What we will see: Roller Champions

This cat is pretty much out of the bag already. Roller Champions is a new competitive multiplayer game from Ubisoft that looks to be somewhat of a cross between Rocket League-esque gameplay (though you play as roller derby player, not a car) and Fortnite-esque visuals that are cartoony and very colorful.

The game while not confirmed by Ubisoft themselves has recently leaked with key art and even footage showing up on forums, so its almost certainly a thing that exists and will be shown at Ubisoft’s E3 2019 presentation.

While Ubisoft certainly has games that are multi-player focused and have an Esports aspect to them, none have been built around that idea, and that’s what Roller Champions seems geared towards.

The challenge facing Ubisoft and Roller Champions is of course that the Esports genre is an incredibly crowded space. Even games that are well made and offer something unique (no one else is doing a roller derby game for sure) can have trouble breaking out and often fall by the wayside. What Roller Derby has going in its favor though is Ubisoft’s commitment mentioned above (you might even say astounding stubbornness) to work and work and work on a game/franchise until it’s popular.

If it takes a few years for Roller Champions to take off, Ubisoft will commit that, not shut the game down after a few months because it doesn’t seem to be gaining traction quickly enough. It will be interesting to see if Roller Champions has an impressive enough showing at this years Ubisoft E3 presentation to stand out in a crowded genre.
