What we won’t see: Any more updates for Starlink: Battle for Atlas

Starlink: Battle for Atlas is a neat game with some cool ships and space action. The problem is that even if you have the option of being completely digital on it for all purchases, what it has been promoted and perceived as is “Toys to Life” game in the same vein as Disney Infinity and Skylanders. That was very popular for a hot minute but had worn out its welcome well before Starlink: The Battle For Atlas even came out.

Ubisoft has tried to make it work. There have been generous free updates, some actually great paid DLC and its fun game that is on sale all the time (if you own a Nintendo Switch and you see Starlink: Battle for Atlas on sale, buy it for the best Starfox content in literally decades).

Ubisoft could continue to try and make it work. like they have done with many of their properties. They have stopped making physical ships because no one was buying those, but that still won’t be enough.

For those reasons we certainly won’t be seeing any mentions of Starlink: Battle for Atlas at this year’s E3 Ubisoft presentation, and Ubisoft might not even mention it ever again. It would be a shame if the property were just buried entirely though. Maybe take what worked about the game and bring it back in the next generation as an AR game, a VR game or even just a reasonably straight-forward but excellent shooter with space exploration. It’s time to retire the squad for now though.

And those are our predictions for what you will see, might see and definitely won’t see during Ubisoft’s E3 2019 presentation. It should be an awesome show with lots of fresh updates to current franchises but also hopefully some really good surprises as well. What do you want to see from Ubisoft at E3 2019? Let us know in the comments and be sure to tune into their presentation, which airs on June 10 at 1 p.m. PT.
