Level up: Super Mario Maker 2 has so many new features

Super Mario Maker 2 will feature new items, level themes and so much more when it arrives on the Nintendo Switch next month.

Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS allowed a pretty fair amount of creativity inside an established Mario framework. It allowed for a lot of things you wouldn’t think you’d see in your regular Mario game. For Super Mario Maker 2 for the Nintendo Switch, it wouldn’t have been that surprising to see Nintendo only add a few more assets and maybe a neat trick or two; it still would’ve been an incredible thing to experience.

However, I think it’s safe to say Nintendo didn’t just surpass expectations with today’s Super Mario Maker 2 Direct; it blew them out of the water. There are so many big and little additions that honestly it would take too long to list everything, but here’s a list of some significant highlights:

  • Custom scrolling for scroll levels where you can set direction and speed
  • Two-players can build a level together by giving one of the players a Joycon
  • You can set clear conditions for each level you create, so it’s not always a race to the end
  • A new story mode with over 100 courses
  • A car that can drive through the levels
  • A pervasive online mode that includes player profiles, achievements, multi-player modes and of course downloading and sharing levels (Nintendo Online membership required)

  • In addition to all those new features, Nintendo is offering some incentives for buying the game, which they rarely do with brand new titles. One is a bundle where you can get Super Mario Maker 2 with a year of Nintendo Online for $69.99, which saves you $10 off a year of Nintendo Online. This will stack on your current membership if you already have one.

The other deal is if you are already a member of Nintendo Online, you can pay for a $100 voucher that is good for two eligible games. Pretty much all the games shown were full-priced Nintendo games, so that’s a savings of $20. Have you been waiting to buy Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Yoshi’s Crafted World? This would be a good time to do so.

You wouldn’t have to decide right away, however; the vouchers are good from one year of purchase so you could pre-order Super Mario Maker 2 (or just buy any other game eligible for the voucher) and wait and see if say, Animal Crossing or Pokemon Sword/Shield are eligible when they come out later this year.

That is just some of the major features shown in today’s Super Mario Maker 2 Direct. You’d really be doing yourself a favor to take 15 minutes and watch the whole thing to really get a scope of just how much bigger this sequel is and how much more you can do with it:

Super Mario Maker 2 seems to be one heck of a sequel in all the right ways. Can’t wait to see what people create with it when it comes out for the Nintendo Switch on June 28.
