It’s hard not to acknowledge how far video games have come. In the past few years, we’ve seen the rise of some of the most graphically impressive and detailed video games powered by impressive graphics engines. Engines such as Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, which powers many of the games you see to this very day, and more recently id Tech 6, are well known for delivering beautiful, detailed experiences to players. Which is why we think they’re worth celebrating.

In order to bring this list together, we’ve put several factors into consideration, such as character, environmental and atmospheric designs. Most importantly, these games must be the best of the best in graphics, animations, and artistic direction at the time of writing. In short, these are the 25 most detailed video games of this generation.

Prey

When it comes to graphically and artistically ambitious games, Prey isn’t one to fool around. It’s a game that brings its atmospherics and environmental details to the forefront and makes them into living characters within the game.

Due to the team’s approach in bringing the game to life, there’s a lot to admire about the hard work that Arkane Studios has put into the game. Every single room, every single fixture feels intricately designed as if they were meant to express individual pieces, just as if they were created in the real world.. This is something we’ve seen in past works by Arkane Studios, too. While both Dishonored and Prey have been designed by two separate teams under the same studio identity, each has very different approaches to their artistic natures.

Much like Arkane’s Dishonored franchise, Prey is all about its visual and artistic appeal making it one of the best games on the market. Unlike Dishonored, however, Prey is a bit flashier and realistic in comparison. Don’t expect this game to be a photorealistic one, but rather a living and breathing painting that wants you to explore everything it has to offer including its oddly designed alien entities.
