#11. Code Vein (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Need a new Dark Souls fix for 2018? Sure, you could play the just recently announced Dark Souls Remastered, but how about something new? Something with a little anime flare? Something with vampires? If this all sounds good to you, you should definitely be keeping an eye on Bandai Namco’s Code Vein.

Code Vein is absolutely an unapologetic Dark Souls clone, but it doesn’t have the really obscure lore, which can be a love/hate thing with some people. And the fact that it revolves around vampires does feature into the gameplay, as you can consume blood that can grant you special abilities that will presumably make fights easier.

It’s hard to say if Code Vein will have the crushing difficulty of the series it is aping. There is certainly more to Dark Souls than just its difficulty, but that is one of the defining traits of that series. The real question is: can Code Vein put enough of its own spin on the formula to make it seem like something that fans of this style of game will like, or will it just be considered an unworthy wannabe? We’ll find out when Code Vein releases later this year.
