18 RPGs we can’t wait to play in 2018
#2. Dragon Quest XI (PS4, Nintendo Switch, 3DS)
Speaking of games that aren’t nearly as big in the U.S. as they are virtually everywhere else, we are finally due for a new Dragon Quest game here in the states in 2018. Since Dragon Quest X is never coming out here, this will be the first game in the series seeing a domestic release since 2009. That’s a pretty long stretch in between games.
Dragon Quest XI is arguably the most staunchly traditional game on this list. The battles remain roughly unchanged turn-based affairs. The really interesting thing about Dragon Quest XI is how the PS4 and 3DS versions differ. The basic gameplay experience will be the same, but the game world is more open on PS4 and on 3DS you can actually go back and forth between the 3D presentation and the more traditional 2D style of older Dragon Quest games if you wish.
One big question mark remains, however, and that is the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI. It has been announced, but since being announced we have seen or heard nothing. Given the massive popularity of the Switch, it seems highly unlikely that this version has been canceled or anything, but it might be coming along later like many Switch versions of games seem to do. I honestly was not a big fan of Dragon Quest IX but I absolutely loved the 100 or so hours I spent with Dragon Quest VIII and this looks very much more in that style, so I’m very much looking forward to it later this year.
