#8. Dragon Quest Builders II (PS4, Nintendo Switch)

Dragon Quest combined with Minecraft sounds like a very cynical cash grab, but Dragon Quest Builders was an extremely well-reviewed game that many people spent dozens if not hundreds of hours on. The first game managed to make itself stand apart from Minecraft in a number of clever ways, most notably having a story that tied all the way back to the very first Dragon Quest game way back on the NES and creating an alternate timeline from that game. It gave context to everything, which is all some people needed beyond the more loose approach you see in Minecraft and games like it.

A sequel only two years later might seem like it might simply be more of the same, but Dragon Quest Builders II is implementing a lot of new features that may greatly change how you play. Sloping hills, waterfalls, swimming underwater and fast travel via hang glider are just a few of the new tools you will have to play and build with along with 4-player co-op.

I admittedly have never gotten into Minecraft simply because I actually think it’s just a little too much freedom for me. Dragon Quest Builders seems to provide that direction though, so I’m very interested to check out the newest installment when it hits sometime this year.
