#9. Vampyr (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

An open-world blood-sucking adventure set in early 1900s Spain during a flu epidemic? Sounds interesting. Vampyr actually might the most mainstream title from Dotnod Entertainment, known mostly for games like Remember Me and Life is Strange, but this just shows that you don’t have to stick them in any kind of box and they are willing to try different things.

Being a blood-sucker has some real benefits, but also possibly some dire consequences in Vampyr. You can actually go through the game without sucking anyone’s blood, but that will make it very hard to level up. You can target anyone, but you have to be very careful and it’s not just a quick grab and drain. You must learn about your potential victims’s lives, daily patterns, and more before taking their lives. Each district  even has its own health score, so you can’t really kill people in secret and not face consequences. How you play the game can lead to a variety of different endings which adds some replay value as well.

Vampires mostly seem played out at this point, but the stunning recreation of the time period and the variety in how you play make Vampyr seem like it’ll be one of the top Western-developed RPGs to keep an eye on in 2018.
