Best New Console of the Year – SNES Classic

Who knew that new Super Nintendo games would see the light in 2017? The SNES Classic (a device that is both a new piece of hardware that produced never-before-released titles, hence its status as a new console) marks the first official console that can play Star Fox 2; a new Nintendo game released more than a decade after its initial development.

Out the gate, the SNES classic has more than a dozen excellent video game titles, a few worthy of greatness and a few that are just plain good. Not only does this device create new suspend points, rewind options and other new gameplay features, but it comes with a wide variety of gameplay experiences and genres baked in.

While some may question the lack of the Nintendo Switch in this category, can it play Final Fantasy III, F-Zero, Mega Man X, Kirby Super Star, Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country?  Heck, it doesn’t even have Netflix on it. Sure, Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are great games, but it’s hard for many to justify buying a $300 console for two excellent games when they can spend $80 getting one with some of the greatest games of all time.

Runners-up: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One X
