Pokemon Trainer Red

That’s right. Pokemon Trainer Red. Red remains one of the toughest NPC battles in any Pokemon game to-date (they finally out-leveled him with Alder in Pokemon Black and White 2) and by far the most epic. His team consists of Blastoise, Venusaur, and Charizard (as a throwback to the three original starters), Snorlax and Lapras (Pokemon you obtained during the story of Red, Blue, and Yellow) and, of course, a level 81 Pikachu to reflect the canonicity of Yellow, where Red obtains a Pikachu alongside all the aforementioned ‘mons.

Every moment from this fight, from the fact that the true Champion is training on top of a snow-covered mountain, to his silent greeting and disappearance after you win, to his team, is so wonderfully crafted for the hardest-hitting nostalgia imaginable. Finding Red atop Mt. Silver is perhaps the perfect icing on the cake of the greatest Pokemon games ever made–a moment that Game Freak, unfortunately, has yet to top.

Pokemon Gold and Silver are available now for purchase on the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
