#6. Parasite Eve I and II

Square usually only has a couple of settings with their RPGs. It’s either fantasy or steampunk, sometimes with something in-between. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that; it’s the basis for many, many fantastic adventures and classic games made by Square and others throughout the years.

But an RPG taking place not even in the vague near future, but modern day, like the same year it came out? That’s practically unheard of (aside from the Persona series, which was a much smaller franchise at the time). And yet that’s exactly what Parasite Eve was, as a young female detective tries to halt devastating events over a six-day span in New York City. For an RPG, that sounds like it should be an impossible setup, but the game worked incredibly well and had a lot great action, customization and looked amazing for the time. This was followed up by a more action-focused, but still esquisite, sequel and then many years later by The Third Birthday which was not good, and we should just pretend never happened.

A collection of the first two games given a nice HD shine is pretty much all that is needed here. Though if Square Enix wanted to put some real effort in, the cutscenes look extremely dated by today’s standards, so they may want to redo those in some fashion.
