#2. Phantasy Star

Phantasy Star was one of the premier RPG franchises back in the 16-bit days. It managed to re-invent itself in 2001 with Phantasy Star Online, which for a lot of console owners was their first experience with any kind of online RPG, and it managed to do it pretty well. But this is also where the series has been for the last several entries and while the series continues in Japan, we haven’t had a release of any kind here in over a decade.

So I’d like to see either a new Phantasy Star Online (maybe on Switch, that would open up a lot of possibilities with that format), or an all-new entry in the main series, which literally hasn’t seen a new game since 1995. The only other series that really tries to tackle a combination of fantasy and science fiction is Star Ocean, and after the last disappointing entry, it’s probably dead. In fact, this generation in general has been lacking a strong number of quality traditional RPGs, and new Phantasy Star game could really help pick up the slack in that area. Hell, have Atlus do it and cross it over the Shin Megami Tensei series; that worked incredibly well for Tokyo Mirage Sessions, one of my favorite Wii U games. Phantasy Star is a franchise that a lot of Sega fans remember fondly and it would be a shame if it’s never heard from again.
