#4. X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse (SNES)

Despite coming out a couple of years prior to Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems and by the same developer, Capcom, I feel X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse is actually the better 16-bit superhero 2D brawler.

There are several reasons for this. The characters look and animate better, for one. But also you play as each X-Man (or X-Woman in Psylocke’s case) through their own individual levels, and since they actually are different, it leads to quite a different experience. I also feel that X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse does a better job of representing the characters’ powers than you see in Marvel Super Heroes in War Of The Gems. Each member of the X-men in the game has a different final level as well, giving it more replay value than similar games usually had. This was arguably the best X-Men game of the 8 and 16-bit era all the way up until we got X-Men Legends, which came out just a tad too recently to make this list.
