5 – Aladdin (Genesis/SNES)

If you grew up in the 16-bit era, you definitely might remember the fanboy war over these two incredibly different video game versions of the mega popular Aladdin, which also happens to be my favorite Disney film. The Genesis version was developed by Virgin Interactive, and looked and sounded very much like the movie. At the time, this was basically considered wizardry. How did a game look and move like this and resemble the movie so closely on the Genesis?

And it wasn’t that that the SNES version looked bad. But it looked more like your average video game while the Genesis version looked like a cartoon. Both were action-platformers that loosely followed the events of the film. Which one was actually better? At the time the clear winner was the Genesis version because hey, it looked exactly like the movie. How could it possibly be the inferior version?

Well, actually once you look past the flashy graphics and realize you are comparing Virgin Interactive to Capcom in its 16-bit heyday, there isn’t that much of a contest. The SNES version is the better game. But the quality of sound and graphics in the Genesis version can’t be ignored. If you are as big a fan of the movie as I am, you’ll love both versions for different reasons.
