6 – Lion King (Genesis/SNES)

As opposed to most of the games on this list being blasted for being far too easy, when it came out, Lion King got a lot of flack for being far too hard. And it’s absolutely true that the game could be maddeningly difficult in some spots.

But much like the top Disney games of the 16-bit era, The Lion King also had insanely great animation, music reproduced from the movie about as well as could be done on a 16-bit system, and a surprising variety of gameplay. After all, in Aladdin, you are just always Aladdin with the same moveset and abilities. In The Lion King, you play as both young Simba and adult Simba, and the gameplay differences actually vary greatly with you having vastly different abilities in the first and second half of the game.

The Lion King probably suffers a bit from also not having the “wow factor” people associate with Aladdin, since that did all the great animation that looked like the movie first. Still a pretty solid if occasionally irritating platformer that’s worth remembering.
