43 – Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Developer: Level-5

Initial Release Date: January 22, 2013

Why it’s one of the best RPGs: Sweet, sad, and magical, Ni No Kuni shows Studio Ghibli’s influence both in visual style and in themes. Wrath of the White Witch is the PS3 version of the same game on the DS, entitled Dominion of the Dark Djinn. Its beautiful art and movie-like ambiance translated better to the console, so Wrath of the White Witch makes our list.

Ni No Kuni follows a young boy named Oliver on a journey to an alternate world. He searches for the alternate universe version of his mother, hoping that saving her in that world will prevent her death within his own. Along the way, he encounters a sage’s daughter and a thief to join his party, and familiars to aid him in battle.

With the likelihood of Studio Ghibli and Joe Hisaishi returning for Revenant Kingdom, Ni No Kuni is far from a forgotten child’s tale. It’s a truly standout RPG series that can captivate young and old audiences alike.
