12 – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Developer: CD Projekt RED

Initial Release Date: May 19, 2015

Why it’s one of the best RPGs: There’s a reason why The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was just about everyone’s game of the year last year. The Witcher series grew from obscure beginnings to a full-fledged, open world, beautiful RPG that managed to retain the sense of freedom of exploration that games like Skyrim boasted while containing a compelling story and engaging combat simultaneously. Kiss boredom goodbye once you step into the shoes of Geralt of Rivia, because the story never stops once you do. Even minor NPCs that you encounter as you travel through towns and forests will stop you with interesting and unique stories to tell. You won’t just help them for the rewards–you’ll want to see how it all plays out.

The Witcher 3 is RPG storytelling at its finest. The writing, voice acting, gameplay, and environment work together in harmony to craft a fabulous ending to Geralt’s adventure. While it’s too bad we probably won’t see any more Witcher games (at least not starring him as the main character), there’s nothing quite like a fitting end to a great hero’s tale.
