37 – Xenoblade Chronicles

Developer: Monolith Soft

Initial Release Date: April 6, 2012

Why it’s one of the best RPGs: While the Wii certainly impressed in many ways, it was awfully light in the RPG department until Xenoblade Chronicles came along. And what a game it was! Taking place atop two ancient Titans locked in an internal conflict, Shulk and his friends must combat the evil Mechon forces who are trying to destroy their race, the Homs. Using the power of the Monado, Shulk actually stands a chance.

Xenoblade Chronicles features a gorgeous soundtrack and a surprisingly open world for its time and for the system it was released on. Though the battle system can wax rather complex as you get deeper into the game, the sheer number of quests and monsters to tackle ensured that you’d get a lot of practice as you journeyed across the Bionis. It’s too bad the 3DS port of the game didn’t do the game justice. Running across those rippling grassy fields on a tiny handheld just wasn’t quite the same.
