Greatest Video Game Villains – #47 Andross

Game(s): Star Fox series

Background: Andross is Fox McCloud’s arch-nemesis and the main antagonist of the Star Fox series. Once a highly renowned Cornerian scientist, this genius become lustful for power and began conducting dangerous biomechanical experiments that led to his banishment to the planet Venom. There he built up an army of humanoid lizards and monkeys in his quest to destroy the Lylat system and become ruler of his own galaxy. The player takes control of Fox and the Star Fox mercenary team to stop his invasion of the galaxy.

In the final battle of Star Fox 64, Andross is revealed as a giant mechanical head floating in space due to his numerous lethal experiments on himself. Fox destroys Andross and reveals his true form, a horrific floating brain that Fox again defeats in an epic battle to end the game.

Why He’s One Of The Greatest Video Game Villains: As is tradition, a once successful and genius scientist turns mad and uses his experiments and research for evil. Andross’ story is that of corruption at the hands of absolute power. Andross had no issue conducting experiments on himself either, turning himself mad and altering his physical being in the worst way. Andross’ destruction resulted in countless deaths, including that of James McCloud, Fox’s father and the leader of the original Star Fox team. This sets up a great rivalry between the two characters, fueled by revenge. Andross frequently taunts Fox, saying that facing Andross alone would result in his death just like his father before him. Andross’ story, his rivalry with Fox, and his memorable appearance (a giant floating monkey head, what’s not to love?) make him an unforgettable video game villain.
