Greatest Video Game Villains – #7 Sephiroth

Game(s): Final Fantasy VII

Background: The main antagonist in the seventh installment in the Final Fantasy series, Sephiroth is revealed throughout the game to actually be the result of a biological experiment. He was created when the Shinra mega-corporation combined a human fetus with tissue from the destructive alien Jenova. Sephiroth decides to follow in Jenova’s footsteps of conquest by summoning a meteor to severely damage the Planet while Cloud and the other protagonists of the game fight to stop him.

Why He’s One Of The Greatest Video Game Villains: One can only imagine the psychological effect it has on a person’s psyche learning that you aren’t actually human, but the product of a crazy genetic science experiment. Sephiroth embraced his newly discovered creation by planning to become a god and destroy the universe (as is tradition for Final Fantasy villains). From the burning of an entire village to the literal backstabbing of love-interest Aeris, the last survivor of her ancient race, Sephiroth committed heinous act after heinous act. In the final boss battle against Sephiroth (complete with epic music), he takes on two visually impressive and powerful forms that arguably is the best in the series. His eerily calm demeanor and his gigantic sword only add to the aesthetics of this epic villain.
