Greatest Video Game Villains – #13 Lavos

Game(s): Chrono Trigger

Background: Lavos is an alien parasite that crash landed on earth in the year 65,000,00 B.C. The main antagonist of Chrono Trigger, Lavos came to this planet with the sole intention of draining all its power to create genetically enhanced spawn it could then spread to other planets. The game implies that Lavos actually influenced all technology and life on the planet so that it could later cultivate it. Lavos slept dormant for millions of years until he finally awoke and put the world into an apocalyptic state. In order to stop him, Crono and his friends embark on a journey across time and space to stop Lavos and save the world.

Why He’s One Of The Greatest Video Game Villains: Lavos is arguably one of the most influential antagonists in any video game story. This alien behemoth essentially shaped the entire world as the player sees it and was responsible for the creation of the modern human species. All just so he could later cultivate it for himself to gain more power. He is both the creator and the (attempted) destroyer of the entire planet. No other villain has such a grand scale effect on the world as Lavos, and it took transcending both time and space for Crono to defeat him.
