Greatest Video Game Villains – #15 Dr. Robotnik

Game(s): Sonic the Hedgehog series

Background: Also known as “Dr. Eggman”, Sonic’s archnemesis is what you might consider a classic stereotypical villain. He’s an evil genius with grandiose plans to take over the world and create his own utopia using his army of robots by stealing the Chaos Emeralds (big jewels with mystical powers). While his in-game design has evolved through the years, he still retains his infamous egg-shaped body and his red, black, and yellow outfit complete with little black sunglasses and his large mustache. Dr. Robotnik has appeared in almost every Sonic video game and other form of media since his introduction in 1991.

Why He’s One Of The Greatest Video Game Villains: Dr. Robotnik is one of the craziest and persistent evil masterminds in video games. While he checks off all of the typical attributes one might expect from a villain, what makes him truly evil is how he powers all of his robotic contraptions: the lives of innocent animals and creatures. Dr. Robotnik is PETA’s number one enemy. His self-proclaimed romanticism is hard to believe when he practices animal cruelty with little regard for anything except his goal to create the “Eggman Empire.” Even though Sonic time and time again foils his plans, Dr. Robotnik never gives up and actually is said to hold a certain level of respect for Sonic. His utter disdain for innocent little animals, the great and timeless rivalry between him and Sonic, and his grandiose mustache make this egg-shaped genius one of video games’ greatest villains.
