Greatest Video Game Villains – #25 Kerrigan

Game(s): Starcraft

Background: Sarah Kerrigan was born a terran (human) female with powerful psychic powers. As a child, she accidentally killed her mother and severely injured her father using her powers. She was taken into custody by the Confederates and put into their special operations Ghost Program. She spent years undergoing torturous training and experiments that turned her into a killing machine unable to feel remorse for her actions. She later became second-in-command of the Sons of Korhal, a resistance movement against the Confederacy. After a battle against the Zerg, the Swarm captured and infested Kerrigan, turning her into a terrifying terran/zerg hybrid. She then took on the title “Queen of Blades” and became the leader of the Swarm, seeking revenge against the terrans.

Why She’s One Of The Greatest Video Game Villains: Kerrigan is one of Starcraft‘s most notable characters, and her image is often used on the game’s box art. She epitomizes the story of the good character turned evil. While her story isn’t quite as clear-cut as that, ultimately Kerrigan’s own people betrayed her and fueled her quest for revenge as a powerful leader of the enemy army. She is a mastermind military general with a courageous and vengeful personality. Nothing smells like revenge more than leading the Swarm to war to annihilate your former people. Not to mention she looks like a complete badass, with tentacle dreadlocks and huge skeletal wings. Her impressive visage along with her dominant narrative influence on the lore of the Starcraft universe earns her a spot as one of video games most recognizable and influential villains. Even Dwight from The Office thinks so.
