Greatest Video Game Villains – #35 Vladimir Makarov

Game(s): Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 3

Background: This Russian terrorist is a primary antagonist in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise, particularly in the second and third games. Leader of the Ultranationalist terrorist cell called the Inner Circle, Vladimir Makarov is a ruthless and cunning strategist who believed that the ends justified the means. His disregard for human life was shown in the infamous Zakhaev International Airport attack, a mission in Modern Warfare 2 that involves the slaughter of hundreds of innocent people at a busy airport. His goal to return the USSR to its former glory shaped the course of history, sparking the third World War. Makarov was eventually found hiding out in a Dubai hotel after the war and was murdered by the protagonist John Price.

Why He’s One Of The Greatest Video Game Villains: What really makes Vladimir Makarov such a great villain is both the realism and controversy behind his actions. In a society plagued by terrorist acts, incorporating something as controversial and brutal as the airport massacre in Modern Warfare 2 really brought to focus the pure evil of terrorism. The player controls an agent infiltrating Makarov’s group, forcing the player to actually take part in the attack and kill innocent people. This scene draws an immediate hatred towards Makarov and shows just how little he cares about human life. His resume of terrorism is extremely long and horrific, involving everything from bombings to assassinations to detonating a nuclear device. His influence not only in the storyline but on the course of history is unparalleled, earning him a spot as one of video games most influential and realistic villains.
