7 Craziest Cards In Hearthstone Whispers Of The Old Gods
C’Thun (and friends)
If you’ve played a match since Whispers of the Old Gods arrived, you’ve seen C’Thun. Because the legendary (and two of his followers) are being doled out for free to anyone who logs in for the launch event, everyone and their dog are running some version of a C’thun deck. Whether they’re doing it well or not is another question entirely, but good or bad, C’Thun has a chance at shaking up longer games considerably if you populate your deck with his followers.
There are lots of cards that buff C’Thun in various ways no matter where he is–in your hand, on the field, in your deck, or dead. Some give +1-3 attack and defense upon conditions such as Battlecry or Deathrattle. Some steal health and attack from other cards to give to him. A sizeable chunk of the new Whispers cards are cards that support C’Thun in some way, so within a few packs, you’ll likely have a small pile of them. Since C’Thun is a late-game card, it’s best played with Priest, Warrior, or Druid decks that can stay alive for a long time while waiting for the Old God to emerge, fully powered. Ideally, when he’s summoned, it’s a win condition. His spells should take your opponent out completely.
But the game doesn’t always go that way. I’ve seen C’Thun thrown in as a last-ditch Hail Mary, and it never seems to work out for the person who plays it. That’s because even a 20/20+ minion is easily counterable with spells like Hex or Polymorph. Or, if you’re a rogue, you can shuffle three of them into your deck with Gang Up, or Mind Control it with a Priest. The great thing about C’Thun decks is that you always know the monster is coming, so you can save such cards for his debut and steal him right out from under your opponent.
No one’s really sure yet if the surge of C’Thun decks will eventually resolve itself into something playable on ladder, but for now, be prepared for some late-game spontaneity at lower levels of play.
