14. Horizon Chase – World Tour

In contrast to the previous title in our rankings, I know exactly which games inspired this one. As laid out in its official App Store description, Horizon Chase “is a racing game inspired in the great hits of the 80’s and 90’s: Out Run, Lotus Turbo Challenge, Top Gear (SNES), Rush, among others.”

So you know exactly what to expect, but how does it play? Pretty darn well, as it turns out. Of the top critics reviews on Metacritic, only Gamezebo had issues with the way the game was implemented.

I just know that as soon as I look at screenshots or fire up this game on my phone, it takes me back. If 16-bit racing games are wrong, I don’t want to be right, and Horizon Chase just might inspire a new wave of throwbacks to the glory days of arcade racers.
