Any list of the greatest iOS games ever is going to have to acknowledge the fact that some games aren’t meant for all people, and 80 Days definitely qualifies. Properly described as a work of interactive fiction, it simply doesn’t have enough gameplay to interest the most action oriented mobile gamers out there.
That being said, anyone who enjoys storytelling regardless of the delivery vehicle is in for a treat. The development team at Inkle managed to take a classic piece of literature, Around the World in Eighty Days, and use it as the skeleton over which was built an impressive work in its own right. Core gamers who long to see their decisions affect the plot in a meaningful way would be wise to check this out.
What 80 Days also has going for it is tremendous depth. Thanks to the branching structure of the story and the numerous possible endings, there’s a lot to dig into and a good deal of replay value. Topping it all off is a sense of style that comes across in the game’s visuals, reinforcing the theme of going on a historic journey.
Yes, it’s hard to describe and to pigeonhole, but that’s a good thing in this case.
