30. The Room Two

Release date: December 12, 2013

Developer: Fireproof Games

Publisher: Fireproof Studios

If you like your mobile puzzle games with a healthy side dish of horror, The Room Two is the game for you. While the premise is remarkably similar to that of its predecessor at the start — you appear to be trapped in a single room and have to solve a series of increasingly complex puzzle boxes — there’s more going on this time below the surface.

So while this game does the usual sequel thing and doubles down on the elements that made the first game so popular and successful, Fireproof achieved a more thorough storytelling triumph here as well. I don’t want to spoil it for you in case you haven’t played it yourself, but suffice it to say that there’s more to the Null than meets the eye, even with the special lens that helps you see it.

Eventually, everything circles back to the start in quite literal fashion, assuming you manage to navigate the more difficult locks that bar your way. The Room Two could have rested on its laurels, coasting on the goodwill the developers built up from The Room. That it didn’t is a big reason the sequel is generally more highly regarded. Now if we could just get The Room Three on our iOS devices, almost all would be right with the world.
