Is it too soon to have a list of the best iOS games of all time? We don’t think so, not with mobile games establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with among the general video game industry.

People have been using their iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices to play games for more than five years, and with so many titles hitting the App Store on a weekly basis, it’s only right to separate the digital wheat from the chaff, as it were.

Here at App Trigger, we’re up for the challenge. But determining what is considered the “best” is a tricky thing, because it involves aggregating and ordering what are essentially a ton of subjective views on the merits of each game.

Fortunately, there’s already a pretty good aggregator out there in Metacritic. While we don’t consider it that be all and end all of what’s considered a great game, it does come in handy when it comes to identifying those that received widespread critical and popular acclaim.

We also had to set some ground rules as to what constitutes an iOS game. For our purposes, games that were in development for iOS on or around the same time as they were for other platforms (for example, XCOM: Enemy Unknown) count, while those that were designed for console or PC and only ported to Apple devices years or decades later (sorry, Sonic CD) do not. We did make a few partial exceptions, simply because we felt the games in question only really came into their own once they hit mobile. Our list, our rules!

In the end, we came up with a formula that is part art and part science, but identifying the best of anything is always going to be that way. We’re going to update this list monthly with any new titles that meet our criteria, so this list will constantly evolve over time — not unlike mobile gaming itself.

Without further ado, let’s get to the games!
