Best PS4 Games #21 – Until Dawn
Developer: Supermassive Games
Synopsis: A group of teenagers returns to their cabin in the mountains of British Columbia, one year after the sudden disappearance of two of their friends. Spitting in the face of fate, trouble comes looking for them as an unknown masked entity stalks them. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and players must choose how to play each character of the group, making choices that not only reflect their own personalities (in addition to impacting their friendship levels with others in the group), but branching the path of their fate. The Butterfly Effect marks the key to survival for many in the group, and making sure you have all the relevant information necessary will help you avoid deadly mistakes.
Why it’s one of the 50 best PS4 games: Your choices matter. As simple as that is, the story goes on whether or not everyone dies, everyone lives or there’s a competent attempt at striking for the middle. Until Dawn plays well into the campy horror sensibilities of an 80’s slasher flick, but pivots in a way that avoids straight-out satire. The game is a faithful homage where not even the game is clear how it’s going to end until you’re in the final stages of gameplay. Additional story aspects that flesh out the entire lore of the game (not discussed to avoid spoilers) really scratch the itch of substance.
Until Dawn is a short, but sweet, compact and gorgeously rendered title, one that everyone should check out.
