Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Venom DLC or spinoff speculation picks up steam
Speculation about DLC or an entire Venom spin-off from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are starting to pick up steam. While many have already expected DLC in some form or another for the superhero blockbuster, Insomniac hasn’t officially confirmed nor denied plans to expand upon the game.
However, Venom voice actor Tony Todd has now poured a bit of fuel on the speculative fires. Speaking to an audience of fans at Fan Expo San Francisco 2023, Todd hinted that some of his voice work for the character might be saved for the future.
Todd stated that Insomniac only used “10% of his Vencom dialogue in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” according to attendee Evan Filarca.
Adding even more fuel, Todd confirmed he “recorded lines for scrapped scenes when Miles had the symbiote.” Although this doesn’t actually happen in the game, it’s believed this could be used in a potential spin-off or DLC.
Again, Insomniac Games hasn’t actually announced plans for DLC or a spin-off to the game; however, the developer is leaving the door open for it. Senior narrative director Jon Paquette previously told Insider that the studio is taking a wait-and-see approach to future Spider-Man content.
“So, here’s what we’re doing. We’re focused on Spider-Man 2, and what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna wait to see how the fans react,” Paquette said when asked about a potential Venom spin-off game. “We’re gonna listen to the fans and we’re gonna ask ourselves: ‘Okay, what do the fans really want?’ We’ll kind of talk about stuff after we’ve all had time to sleep and take vacations.”
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been both a critical and commercial success for Sony. In addition to earning a Game of the Year nomination, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game over a 24-hour period. It sold more than 2.5 million copies in just 24 hours.
Given the game’s sales success, some for of additional content seems likely. Plus, as we’ve seen with Insomniac in the past, the studio isn’t opposed to releasing spin-offs. In 2020, we got the Miles Morales standalone spin-off game which accompanied the launch fo the PlayStation 5.
