8) Horizon Forbidden West

A ways back when researching open-world games and my disdain for how long and fluffed out they tend to be I found out that out of all the people that bought Horizon Forbidden West, only 13% percent actually beat the game. So with that in mind, I have no problem saying that while this is on my list I absolutely did not beat it.

I put about 60 hours into it though. And if you don’t beat a game within 60 hours of playing, I’m sorry but you overfilled the plate.

But my stopping playing is ONLY because of how giant the game is. The game itself is fantastic. The controls are great. There are a bunch of different ways to experiment with the various weapons you can unlock. It looks phenomenal. The story is fantastic and slowly gives you the story of how the world basically ended because of the nonsensical actions of an attention-seeking rich guy with a fragile ego. You know, something that definitely won’t happen to us.

My only other issue with the game is the fact that they basically forced a romantic interest on Aloy. That isn’t necessary. I promise you game industry, you can have a female protagonist without putting her in a relationship.

7) New Tales from the Borderlands

I really mourned the loss of TellTales so when they shut down I thought games like this were just donezo. I loved games like this that went all in on the story. So when I saw New Tales from the Borderlands was getting made I was both excited and skeptical. Luckily, I only needed to be excited because it was fantastic.

New Tales from the Borderlands is an absolutely fantastic interactive story that does a great job telling the tales of three individual characters who couldn’t be more different as they band together, bond, and stop something far above any of their pay grades.

The humor, while a little groan worth at times was fun and wasn’t afraid to absolutely make fun of you for a stupid choice (of which there were so many to make). This also made the emotional moments so much stronger as it became so startling when people realized they needed to buckle down and get serious.

My only complaint with this one was that they shoehorned in a weird minigame that involved smashing collectibles together. Felt out of place and I hated it.
